Early winter outdoor guide to Ylläs

Where can you ski, bike, and walk?

In Ylläs, ski tracks are made on natural snow and opened gradually as snow conditions allow. Early in the season, people often wonder: can you bike, is skiing already possible, and where exactly are the tracks?

Just because the grooming machine is out doesn’t mean the ski trail is officially open and ready. During the base preparation phase, the trail is still shared-use. In practice, this means that as long as there are no classic ski grooves on the trail – except for lit tracks, which are reserved for skiers only – you can still walk or bike there. You can also ski on these prepped trails if you want, but the surface may be rough, so we recommend using rock skis.

Once the classic grooves are in place and the ski trail appears on the digital map, it’s officially open for skiing only – and safe to use. The summer map will also show a notice when a trail is closed. On the digital map, both summer and winter trails are visible. You can switch between seasons using the “layers” button in the top right corner.

The 3 km loop “Lämpökolmonen,” starting from Ihmisenrinki, is usually the first ski trail to open.

what about winter trails – when can you hit the track?

In early winter, there may be moments when biking in nature isn’t possible. Even if the landscape looks wintry, the winter trails can’t be groomed yet, and summer trails are no longer suitable for riding. Creating winter trails requires a lot of snow – in fact, even more than ski tracks.

That’s why we recommend trying something completely new: how about snowshoeing or snow surfing?
