Easily accessible Ylläs is located just a half-hour drive from Kolari train station and Kittilä airport. Ylläs, situated in the municipality of Kolari, has two well-known original and genuine villages, Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, which are located on different sides of the Ylläs fell.

Arrival to Ylläs
Train to Ylläs
Board a night train at Helsinki railway station and you’ll arrive in Kolari the following morning. It’s also possible to board the train at other cities such as Tampere and Oulu along the way to Lapland.
At Kolari railway station, a shuttle bus will take you directly to Ylläs.
Note! Train bus does not go to Palovaara anymore due to low demand.
In winter train goes every night. In summer there is mainly four trains a week.

Note! Arriving via/from Rovaniemi
From Rovaniemi to Ylläs it is best to go with a car or by taxi, about 2 hours drive. Indirect Rovaniemi-Ylläs bus connection is only available on the days train arrives to Kolari with the following combo: First take a bus to Levi and then the train shuttle bus to Ylläs. Transfer times can be very long!

Bus to Ylläs
Direct bus connections to Ylläs come from Kolari Train station and Kittilä Airport. Outside the peak season, the airport bus operates as an on-demand service.
We recommend checking the bus schedules and purchasing tickets in advance with Trips and Tickets app (by Matkahuolto) as it combines different routes to a journey. Matkahuolto.fi website does not offer same functionality.
Ylläs to levi and otherway around
In addition to taxis and rental cars, you can also travel from Ylläs to Levi by bus. However, there is no regular public transport service between the resorts. Available options include the airport bus to Kittilä Airport, from where there are onward connections to Levi, as well as the train bus from Kolari railway station.
Additionally, between December 25, 2025, and April 6, 2026, a daily bus operates from Ylläs to Levi via Lapland Hotels SnowVillage. It’s recommended to check the schedules and connection compatibility on the Matkahuolto website and, if necessary, on the Liikenne Rundgren website. Outside the peak season, the airport bus operates as an on-demand service.
By car to Ylläs
Naturally you can drive to Ylläs. Even though we are above the Arctic Circle, our roads are in good condition year-round. Have enough time, drive carefully and watch out for the reindeer.
- From Helsinki-Jyväskylä-Oulu-Kemi-Tornio road follow signs to Kolari (road 21/E8) and turn to Ylläsjärvi (road 939) – or from Kolari continue another 10km and turn right to Äkäslompolo (road 940). Both roads take you directly to Ylläs in same time.
- From Rovaniemi follow signs to Kittilä (road 79). After Kittilä turn left to Ylläsjärvi (road 80). From Ylläsjärvi you can take Scenic Road to Äkäslompolo, distance between villages is 15km.
- From Tromsø-Kilpisjärvi-Muonio follow signs to Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi.
- From Inari-Sodankylä-Kittilä follow signs to Ylläsjärvi and Äkäslompolo.
