Getting around in Ylläs
Enjoying a holiday in Ylläs is easy even without a car. During the winter season, the Ski Bus provides convenient transport between the villages and the ski resort, while local taxi services and car rental companies operate year-round. Electric bikes are also an excellent and unique way to travel between services and nearby nature attractions.
Ylläs Ski Bus
By Ski Bus, you can easily travel between the villages of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi as well as the ski resort throughout the entire ski season, from November until early May. In addition to the ski resort, the bus offers convenient access to many cross-country skiing trails, other activity starting points, and local shopping areas.
The Ylläs Ski Bus operates from Helukka via the services and hotels of Äkäslompolo to Ylläs Ski Resort Äkäslompolo, and continues on to Ylläs Ski Resort Ylläsjärvi, Lapland Hotels Saaga, and Hotel Ylläsrinne, finally reaching the village of Ylläsjärvi and K‑Market Eelin Kauppa. The same route is also operated in the opposite direction.
Please note that some Ski Bus departures operate only on part of the route. We recommend checking the timetable for the specific route and stops of each departure.
The first bus departs from Helukka in Äkäslompolo at 8:57 am, and the last service returns to the terminal stop in Helukka at 5:45 pm or 7:35 pm, depending on the season.
In addition to the main stops shown in the timetable, there are several other Ski Bus stops along the route where the bus will also stop — for example, in front of the Kellokas Visitor Centre on Tunturintie. These stops are marked with Ski Bus signs.

Ylläs and Kolari taxis can be booked via the dispatch centre by calling +358 20 071 800 (24/7). The cost of the call is €1.92 per call plus local or mobile network charges. Ylläs‑Kolari Taksit Oy offers a wide range of transport services, including pre‑booked taxis, special transport services, and executive transfers. The company operates a fleet of 15 modern, well‑equipped vehicles of various sizes. Van and trailer transport services are also available.

Tips for travellers driving in lapland
When driving in Lapland, conditions, distances, and the traffic environment differ in many ways from elsewhere. The following guidelines help you prepare for Arctic conditions and promote safe and smooth travel for all road users.
- Do not stop in the middle of the road to take photos. Stopping in a driving lane may create dangerous situations for other road users and obstruct the flow of traffic.
- Keep warm clothing and a thermal (emergency) blanket in your car. In case of an emergency, you may need to wait for assistance for an extended period, either inside the vehicle or outdoors in cold conditions.
- Check in advance where you can refuel along the way. Distances in Lapland are long, and fuel stations are not as frequent as in cities. Cold temperatures also increase fuel consumption.
- Respect private property and road closures.
- Snow narrows the roads. Drive with extra caution and slow down when meeting oncoming traffic, especially on narrow or snowy sections of the road.
- Be aware of cyclists and other road users. There are many pedestrians and cyclists in the area, and sidewalks or road shoulders are not always available. Drive calmly and be prepared for encounters.
- Watch out for reindeer and other animals. Reindeer are most commonly seen on the roads between July–August and November–January, but they may be present year-round.
