What to do in Ylläs when it’s raining, visibility is poor, or it’s freezing cold? When the weather in Ylläs shows its less favorable side with freezing temperatures, strong winds, or rain, you don’t have to stay bored in your cabin.
Extreme cold – what can I do outdoors?
Even if it’s freezing cold outside, you don’t have to give up on outdoor activities in Ylläs. Thanks to temperature inversion, it can be significantly warmer in the fells. Active cross-country skiers are familiar with the ”Lämpökolmonen” skiing track. This approximately three-kilometer-long trail runs entirely along the side of the fell near the Ylläs Ski Resort Äkäslompolo.
The name ”Lämpökolmonen” is well-deserved, as the temperature on this trail often remains much warmer than in the lower villages or on trails running through open areas or near swamps. Other trails in the fells, such as the Kuertunturi snowshoeing trail, can also be good options for cold days. If the weather allows, you can visit one of the many wilderness café in Ylläs. Some of them are accessible by car.

It is often significantly warmer on the ski slopes during periods of extreme cold. As the cold persists, the cold air gradually rises higher up the fell. Wind can also mix air masses and cause rapid temperature changes. Wind significantly increases the chill factor. Check the weather and temperatures on the Ylläs weather page. The ski resort also publishes daily weather and slope information every morning before opening.
